These days it’s all too easy to binge watch the night away with bae on the couch. While we love a chill night as much as the next person, shaking it up could be exactly what you need to reignite the fire that brought you together in the first place. Below we’ve compiled our favorite ways to reconnect with your S.O. using science as our guide!
- Create a weeknight ritual together.
According to licensed psychotherapist Shirin Peykar, LMFT, “Couples can form closer bonds by creating rituals of connection through things like doing chores together, having a set time to talk or just having something special you do as a couple when you get home.” At ThirstyNest, exploring new wines, spirits and cocktails together is our favorite after-work activity to bring you closer. Try opening a special bottle from your wedding gifts on a random evening to upgrade an everyday occasion.
We can’t think of a better bottle than Brut Premier from the famed Champagne house of Louis Roederer. Its ideal structure, texture and crispness make it a perfect entrée into the entire category of Champagne. The rich history of this celebrated category of wines and its fascinating producers and process makes it an ideal—and romantic—evening activity for learning and connecting.
- Host a game night!
Whether you’re competing 1-on-1 or inviting other couples, hosting a game night is a great way to switch it up. Between Scrabble, Settlers of Catan or even Cards Against Humanity, getting the competitive juices flowing adds a little spice to a regular date night in. It can help you build a subconscious bond while also helping you learn to communicate and break down walls together.
If that weren’t enough, doing things that are pleasurable and fun like board games activates the release of the chemical dopamine from the brain’s reward center.Dopamine is the love-struck hormone that makes you feel like you’re in the honeymoon phase all over again!
- Put 👏 down 👏 the 👏 phone. 👏
It’s no secret that we’re obsessed with our phones. This obsession causes a multitude of issues that linger below the surface and can slowly erode your partnership. As described by Dr. Susan Weinschenk,Chief Behavioral Scientist at The Team W, Inc., “We’re very sensitive, especially in romantic relationships, about our prioritization in the person’s life. The other person will say ‘I’m listening, I can listen, let me just check one message’ and it really becomes a symbol of how present somebody is at the moment.”
Try experimenting with a no-phone-night together and see how much better you connect! An excellent tool for this idea is the Yondr phone pouch. (Yes, another gadget to stop us from using gadgets.) These little bags keep your phone out of site and - literally - disconnected so you can focus on what’s most important.
- Remember the good old days!
Create a throwback date night from the year you two met! Psychology Today tells us that reminiscing together can actually help to strengthen the bond you have as a couple. Spend some time putting together a playlist of the greatest hits from the year you started dating or a concert you went to together. Another great way to dive back in time is to have a movie night with your favorite movies from when you first started dating.
We also love the idea of recreating the drinks you had on your first date or honeymoon. Reconnecting over the things that brought you together initially will help bring those good feelings and intimacy back.
